Colleges must guard against defining intellectual competence as skill at passing tests or mastery of some “essential” knowledge. Beyond the ability to memorize facts lies the ability to seek them out with well-formed questions. Beyond the ability to score well on tests lies the ability to construct meaning, using words, images, and theories. Beyond skill at finding the right answer lies the ability to generate many answers and choose between them based on reasoned argument, credible evidence, or other appropriate criteria.
